Document encryption is the process by which documents are protected with cryptographic keys (public key, token, etc.) so that only individuals with the corresponding decryption keys (private key, token, etc.) can open them. It is used to protect documents in transit (i.e. sent via email) and at rest (i.e. stored on a disk or in the cloud) from being accessed by unauthorized users.
